READING, Pa. — What begins on the page can take on an entirely different life when readers gather in the same room.
That was the spirit Thursday afternoon at Exeter Community Library, where journalist, author and VOZ NYC founder José Martínez joined community members for a conversation centered on storytelling, identity, belonging and the immigrant experience.
The September 17 event featured a reading from Martínez’s memoir, Your English Is Great, But…: A Life Between Languages, Cities, and Grief, followed by a discussion and audience Q&A.
But the afternoon became about something larger than one book.
It became a conversation about the experiences people carry with them: the places they come from, the languages they speak, the communities they find and the complicated process of figuring out where “home” is.
For Martínez, those conversations are at the heart of both his writing and journalism.
“A book may begin with one person’s story, but something changes when readers start recognizing pieces of their own lives in it.”
Your English Is Great, But… explores Martínez’s experiences across languages and cities, using memoir to examine immigration, grief, identity and the search for belonging.
Thursday’s gathering also reflected the role local libraries continue to play as spaces where those conversations can happen face-to-face.
Surrounded by readers and members of the Exeter Community Library community, the event moved beyond a traditional author appearance and became an opportunity to exchange experiences and perspectives.
For VOZ NYC, that idea is familiar.
The independent media platform was created around the belief that personal stories can illuminate much larger conversations about culture, migration, identity and community.
Sometimes those stories appear on a screen.
Sometimes they live in a book.
And sometimes, as they did Thursday in Exeter, Pennsylvania, they simply begin with people gathering in a room and talking to one another.
Because the strongest stories don’t end when they’re published. They keep traveling.
